GasOriente Boliviano Ltda. is made up of two companies, Shell International and Prisma Energy International*, that have a century of combined experience in the hydrocarbon industry, including construction of facilities, and reliable and safe operations.

History
In 1999, the company was authorized to build a gas pipeline, which comes off the Bolivia-Brazil pipeline approximately 242 km. east of Río Grande and has as its final destination San Matías, a town that borders with Estado de Matto Grosso, Brazil. From here, the pipeline continues to the Gov. Mario Covas Power Plant in Cuiabá, Matto Grosso, a thermal power plant which generates up to 480 megawatts of energy, essential for satisfying the energy demand and economic development of the region. Together, the Bolivian and Brazilian pipelines are known as the Cuiabá pipeline, totaling 645 km.

To obtain authorization from the Government of Bolivia to initiate construction of the gas pipeline, GasOriente complied with all relevant Bolivian laws and requirements. In particular, the company strictly observed the requirements of Environmnental Law 1333 and conducted an Environmental Impact Evaluation study, which subsequently led to Gas Oriente receiving the Environmental License for construction of the project. Construction of the pipeline began in the summer of 1999 and concluded by the end of 2000. Commercial operations began on May 1, 2002.

Recognizing its obligations to the people and environment of the region, the company has undertaken and financed numerous community building, cultural, and environmental activities. While our environmental work has focused on preserving and restoring the pipeline’s right-of-way.

The company also has made significant additional contributions to the Fundación para la Conservación de Bosque Chiquitano (FCBC). This organization, which is totally independent of GasOriente in its mission, governance, and total funding, addresses environmental issues that pertain to the whole of the Chiquitano Dry Forest, rather than those related to the pipeline.

*In 2003, Prisma Energy was formed with the intent of owning and operating the assets of the Enron Corporation.
